A Queer Trial

Set in 1860 colonial Victoria, the play tells the real life story of John Butt, an openly gay man, who is acquitted of sodomy. The play tells the un-sung story of Victoria’s unwitting pioneer for gay rights when a trial jury, including First Nations, Chinese businessman and other Victoria leaders, embarks on a moral adventure that leads to their imprisonment. They choose a night in jail over condemning a man for loving another man. This true story shows Victoria’s early signs of tolerance, humanity and acceptance.
