A Place to Listen, Victoria B.C’s newest — and only — monthly experimental music series was founded in 2012 by composer and pianist Daniel Brandes. It takes place third Wednesdays of the month at James Bay United Church, 517 Michigan St. A Place to Listen is about exploring the relationships between sound and silence, audience and performer, performer and score.
It is about creating a new way of being together musically, socially. Most of the composers featured in this series are working within the community and artistic-practice known as “Wandelweiser”. Put most basically, this is a community of artists dedicated to sharing each others’ work. Most are exploring the use(s) of silence in contemporary music. But that hardly tells the story. If you are interested, Michael Pisaro has written a very thorough and engaging history of Wandelweiser that can be found at http://www.wandelweiser.de/
Rather than a concert series, this is a listening series. _____________________________
Wednesday May 20th:
Daniel Brandes and Alex Jang will perform Antoine Beuger’s “We Are Voices” for two playing, singing, speaking musicians. It is always a special experience to encounter one of Antoine’s duos. It is musical constellation that is deeply important to him, and one which he has explored deeply as a composer—always discovering something new about what it means to play “two-gether”.
