A New International Climate Treaty? A post-Lima report back and a pre-Paris countdown with Elizabeth May

Join Elizabeth May, federal Green party leader and co-author of “Global Warming for Dummies”, Guy Dauncey, BC Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA) president, and Ken Wu, Majority for A Sustainable Society (MASS) executive director, for a forum on climate change politics and activism, with a focus on Canadian national policies and the prospects for an effective new United Nations Climate Treaty.
In December 2015, the world’s most important international deal could be signed in Paris to safeguard the climate through the UN Climate Summit (COP 21). Elizabeth May recently returned from the previous UN Climate Summit (COP 20) held in Lima, Peru, last December. Now climate activists, negotiators, and even the Catholic church under Pope Francis are all mobilizing for the decisive climate summit late this year in Paris where a new global climate treaty is expected to be finalized.
Climate change is a global problem, requiring a global solution - only a comprehensive international treaty can avert the climate crisis by ensuring that all major emission sources are accounted for and curtailed. Our global “boat” will eventually sink unless all major leakages are closed.
Human-induced climate change threatens humanity by driving increased extreme weather events, droughts, floods, hurricanes, infrastructure damage, food shortages, ocean acidification, rising sea levels, mass species extinctions, climate refugees, and large-scale conflicts and wars.
The transition to a prosperous, low carbon economy based on green businesses and jobs in the clean technology, renewable energy, energy efficiency and conservation sectors is necessary, inevitable, and already underway in many parts of the world.
It is crucial that Canada play a constructive role – instead of the role of the saboteur as it has done under the Harper regime - to ensure that the international community ratifies an ambitious, fair, and legally-binding International Climate Treaty in Paris. This is needed to ensure the rapid global transition into an advanced, low-carbon economy and avert the worst climate change impacts – instead of allowing the world to continue to descend into climate chaos. Only a large-scale, broad-based mobilization can ensure that Canada gets on track as a global climate leader.
