Island Soul Choir, under the direction of Karla Mundy, is returning once again to The Port Theatre to perform their newest program of soul-inspiring songs: A Better Way. This collection of powerful melodies and beautiful vocal arrangements brings home how singing for the pure joy of singing can bring peace, beauty and harmony into this world. Ms. Mundy’s selections remind us just how blessed we all are and, in giving thanks, our hearts can fill with gratitude and compassion for those less fortunate.

Island Soul Choir is all about the love of singing. Members come from all over the island without necessarily having any prior choir experience, just to be able to sing, and they discover so much more for themselves in the process. Nathalie Cooke, our Marketing Chair has this to say about the choir; “It is truly inspiring to see how easily old and new choir members can blend their voices so well together in harmony in such a short space of time - one song at a time. It is truly magical.” The old choir members keep coming back, and new members keep wanting to join.

The choir rehearses together about once a month, unlike traditional choirs that rehearse weekly, because Ms. Mundy has to travel from Vancouver to the Island. Given that the choir is now into its eighth year and still has an ever-growing membership, this unheard-of rehearsal format clearly works! As a result of the extended time between rehearsals, Island Soul Choir is able to attract singers from all over Vancouver Island, from Victoria to Port Hardy, as well as some nearby islands. This is truly an all-Island choir.

The choir’s repertoire is yet another unique feature. They sing gospel, spirituals, world music, blues, pop, soul, R&B… basically any type of music that touches, moves or inspires the soul. The choir regularly brings audiences to their feet, singing, clapping and even dancing along with the music.

Special guests for this concert will be Freedom Gospel Choir with singers from all over the Cowichan Valley. Directed by Ann Antonides and accompanied by Tanya Gillespie, choir members come from all ages and walks of life, with varying degrees of musical training. The one thing they all have in common is a love of spirituals, African music, old-time gospel, and folk music. The choir has been profoundly blessed and energized through the joy and hope that is intrinsic to gospel music, and it is proudly sponsored by St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Duncan.
