Taking a New Approach to Criminal Justice: Reconciliation and Restorative Justice
Featuring the Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada
Ms. Wilson-Raybould carries a significant mandate from the Prime Minister to instigate restorative practices within the justice system and the promotion of reconciliation.
As Canada’s first Indigenous Justice Minister, she comes to this task with abundant qualifications. She has served as:
Crown Prosecutor on Vancouver’s Downtown East Side;
Member, and later as Chair, of BC’s Treaty Commission; and
BC Regional Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.
Her strongly expressed views include:
-advocating for evidence-based criminal justice policy, including upholding judges’ sentencing discretion, and looking at crime and punishment from multiple perspectives;
-moving forward with the Liberals’ commitment to implement all 94 recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission; and
-introducing an overarching cross-government reconciliation framework to implement what has been directed by the courts and set out in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
