Order at Any Cost? Police and Protests after Authoritarian Rule in Argentina and Chile
This talk explores democratization and the challenge of managing protests after authoritarian rule. The cases of Argentina and Chile are compared.

Michelle Bonner is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Victoria. Her area of expertise and interest is Latin American politics and particularly the process of democratization in the region. Her work centres on the study of state-society relations and on debates around the appropriate balance between security and human rights. She is the author of Sustaining Human Rights: Women and Argentine Human Rights Organizations (Penn State University Press, 2007). She has published a number of articles in academic journals on how the media and state officials discuss the management of protests in Argentina and Chile. She has recently completed a book manuscript titled Managing Dissent: Police, Protests and the Press in Argentina and Chile. In addition to teaching general courses on Latin American politics and international development at UVic, she also enjoys teaching a course on transitional justice and a new course on the mass media in Latin America.

50th Anniversary Deans' Lecture Series
In celebration of the University of Victoria�s 50th Anniversary we are pleased to bring you an expanded 50th Anniversary Deans� Lecture Series for 2012/2013. The series is presented in partnership with the Greater Victoria Public Library, the 50th Anniversary Organizational Team, the Division of Continuing Studies and the Faculties of Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Graduate Studies, Human and Social Development, Humanities, Law, Science and Social Sciences.

Daytime Lectures are held at the Greater Victoria Public Library, Central Branch, 735 Broughton St. Parking is available underground and you are welcome to bring a bag lunch.

Evening Lectures are held at the UVic Legacy Art Gallery, 630 Yates St. Parking is available in nearby lots. No food or drink is allowed in the gallery.

Please note that registration will open on August 8th. Online registration is NOT available for the Dean�s Lecture Series. Admission to the lectures is free but you must register by calling 250-472-4747 so we can guarantee you a seat. If you are unable to attend a lecture for which you have registered please let us know so that we can offer a seat to someone else.
