Camosun’s upcoming 4th annual Camosun Comic Arts Festival (CCAF) promises a full day of exciting activities for the public on all things related to visual storytelling. Hosted by the college’s Comics & Graphic Novels program, the festival is a celebration of the artistic and literary impact of comics and graphic novels created locally, nationally, and internationally. Attendees will hear, see, and experience the process of visual storytelling, and discuss the medium with the students, teachers, professional creators, publishers, and other fans. Admission is free.
A highlight of the event will be the “artists alley” showcasing publications and artwork created by 20 students in the Comics & Graphic Novels program. Professional guest mentors this year include Nelson Dewey, Gareth Gaudin, Karen Gillmore, Janine Johnston, Sam Logan, Deni Loubert, Glen Lovett, Glen Mullaly, and Alex Steacy. The keynote talk will be hosted the next day by Bolen Books at Hillside Centre on Sunday, April 17th at 6pm, and will feature special guest creators Tony Cliff, Faith Erin Hicks, Sam Logan, and Renee Nault.
Attendees will have the opportunity to make their own visual stories in a “comics jam” and practice drawing their favourite characters, thanks to the participation of Superheroes of Victoria. Comics, prints, and original artwork by both students and professionals will be available for sale.
