22nd Lanterns for Peace Ceromony

Please come and bring friends to this important and beautiful ceremony commemorating the first use of a nuclear bomb which devastated the city of Hiroshima in 1945 and affirming our need to work for peace.

The 22nd Lanterns for Peace Ceremony will be held in Nanaimo on August 6th at Maffeo Sutton Park, Swy-A-Lana Lagoon.


Peace songs around 8:30 with Janette Briere and Frank Graham and the formal program beginning at 9 pm with the reading of the Proclamation from the City of Nanaimo by Mayor Krog

Margaret Sutton- Japanese flute
Speakers --Tami Hirasawa from the Central Vancouver Island Japanese Canadian society, brief messages from MP Lisa Marie Barron and MLA Sheila Malcolmson and Brad Langerud from the Freedom From War Coalition.

The public is invited to help launch the 35 lanterns at 9.30.


The ceremony is organized each year by the Nanaimo chapter of WILPF, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, the oldest women’s international peace group beginning in 1915.
