What does a small arts centre on Vancouver Island do to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday? The Old School House Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach extended a national call for entries for a juried exhibition.
We asked artists to paint their interpretation of the exhibition theme, which is My Canada. Examples might be a landscape, a representation of memories or a depiction of dreams for the future. 55 paintings were juried into the exhibition by Judges Merv Brandel, Don Farrell and Gerda Hofman, three local as well as internationally respected artists.
In order to give artists of all skill levels a chance to participate, an additional 10 paintings were chosen from a lottery pool of all entries. 234 paintings were entered, 65 shortlisted paintings will be hung on June 26th and the winners will be chosen after the work has been hung.
The first prize is $800.00, second prize is $500.00 and third prize is $300.00. In addition, each winner will receive a commemorative vase created by First Nations artist Terry Jackson from the Town of Qualicum Beach. There will also be three Honourable Mention awards.
The Opening Reception for this special exhibition will be held on Wednesday, June 28th at 2:00 p.m., and the show will be on display until August 7, 2017. A catalogue that includes ALL painting entries will be available for purchase. In this catalogue, artists selected for the show as well as the lottery winners will have their paintings featured along with a short biographical profile. In addition, all participating artists will be noted, and thumbnail photos of their respective submissions will be included.
