SUMMARY:VIU Science and Technology Lecture Series: Rats About Town
URL:http://www.harbourliving.ca/event/viu-science-and-technology-lecture-series-rats-about-town/
LOCATION:Vancouver Island University, Bldg 356, Room 109 :: 900 Fifth Street Nanaimo,
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
In this free public lecture Kaylee Byers will discuss how rats have been, and continue to be, the source of numerous pathogens that can be transmitted to people and how despite the anecdotal evidence that rats are thriving in cities across Canada, there is little data on rats in Canada, their parasites, and their pathogens. To address this knowledge gap, the Vancouver Rat Project was founded to study the ecology and epidemiology of rat-associated pathogens in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Kaylee will outline her research into rat fleas which are particularly important because they can transmit some pathogens among rats and from rats to people. Kaylee will discuss what is known about rat pathogens in the Downtown East Side, and will share her preliminary data describing the species of rat fleas, the bacterial communities present in the flea gut, and an evaluation of how rat movement may influence the spread of disease.

https://web.viu.ca/simmsw
