LOCATION:Victoria Folk Music Society :: “Norway House”, 1110 Hillside Ave, (between Quadra and Cook St.) Victoria,
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Michael “Lopez” Phillips drew inspiration at a young age from folk, country, blues, and bluegrass recordings. After busking for a while, he formed a series of jug bands in Halifax, Vancouver, and finally Toronto, where his last band, Jughead, recorded the gold-record “Hockey Song” in 1993.=0D=0A=

Shortly thereafter, Lopez became a father and moved his young family north to Ontario’s cottage country, where cabinet-making became his requisite day job while he continued to play frequent gigs both as a sideman bass player and as a solo act in bars and farmers’ markets around Muskoka.=0D=0A=

These days, with both his child-rearing years and his marriage at an end, Lopez has turned to touring and recording. He released his first solo album “Mighty Lopez,” combining newly penned originals with a mix of covers, in the summer of 2013.=0D=0A=

Our feature act will be preceded by what is arguably Victoria’s best weekly acoustic Open Stage session where musicians from fledglings to professionals can perform a 10 minute set for one of the most welcoming, attentive and participative audiences in town. Aspiring Open Stage performers can sign-up with the VFMS Host between 7:00 and 7:30pm to do a set but should get there early to improve their chances of getting on the evening’s line-up.
