Jon Brooks isn’t interested in “happy songs” — he admits no understanding of such a song. He’s interested in the soul of things. In an age wherein Wikipedia has obliterated the unanswerable question, he reinvigorates our ancient joy of unknowing. In an age of polarized politics and binary thinking, he lifts us, if only for a night, above ‘ism’ and ‘ology’ in the effort we see each other as individual human beasts. Jon isn’t interested in “happy songs” — he’s inter­ested in hopeful songs.

A five-time Canadian Folk Music Awards nominee, Jon is a record-setting 4-time loser of 4 nomin­ations for English Songwriter of the Year. He plans to break his own record. He is joined by Neil Cruickshank, co-founder and guitarist for Brickhouse, a Blues/Funk Vancouver band that has recently released their latest CD, “Future”. Our feature act will be preceded by what is arguably Victoria’s best weekly acoustic Open Stage session where musicians from fledglings to professionals can perform a 10 minute set for one of the most welcoming, attentive and participative audiences in town. Aspiring Open Stage performers can sign-up with the VFMS Host between 7:00 and 7:30pm to do a set but should get there early to improve their chances of getting on the evening’s line-up.
