DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:“Then and Now” J.S. Bach & Arvo Pärt: A Choral Celebration=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
The Victoria Conservatory of Music is programming a unique pairing of choral masterworks as their contribution to the upcoming centennial celebration: The Magnificat by J.S. Bach, and the Berliner Messe (Berlin Mass) by contemporary Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. “The goal was to create a program that connected with this event, having both a celebratory aspect and a sense of past and present,” explains the VCM’s Brian Wismath. “The much-loved Bach work is so cheerful and extravagant, while Pärt’s is so rich and meditative and transporting . . . they’re a great double bill,” he says. Wismath is also the conductor of Vox Humana, the city’s leading chamber choir, and their 24 glorious voices will be joined by two dozen members of the Victoria Symphony for this don’t-dare-miss-it performance. The leading soloists for the show, all with international cachet, include Baroque soprano Nancy Argenta, tenor Benjamin Butterfield, and Toronto-based countertenor Daniel Taylor. “This will be an extraordinary delight, even for neophyte listeners,” adds Wismath. “The music is accessible, and very exciting.”=0D=0A=
