Edith Piaf, beloved by millions, gave her last performance at the Paris Olympia in 1963. Her unique voice and passion evoke a time and place for listeners, of Europe before and after the war, and of a life filled with tragedy and endurance. In homage, Edie Daponte presents Under Paris Skies – La Musique d’Edith Piaf; a night of music and entertainment inspired by Paris. Widely regarded as France's national chanteuse, Edie will perform many of Piaf’s soulful and emotional numbers with a full live-band. "Non Je Ne Regrette Rien", "La Vie en Rose", "Sous le Ciel de Paris", "Milord", and many more, interwoven with Edie’s engaging style of audience-interaction, and interpretation of the French numbers. She’ll also be mixing in some of Edith Piaf’s English songs and a few more that fit alongside Piaf’s oeuvre – inspired by a recent trip to Paris.
Channelling Piaf, with her rich timbre and captivating stage presence, Edie aims for a completely authentic experience and her experienced band helps create the atmosphere of an intimate Parisian theatre. Joining Edie are long-time collaborator Joey Smith on bass, and Vancouver Island favourites Karel Roessingh on piano, Jonathan Eng on drums and filling the important role of accordionist, Aaron Watson. These talented musicians all have long careers in the B.C. jazz scene.
Edie (named Edith at birth) feels Piaf has always had a role in her life. Piaf’s songs soundtracked her early years, despite not understanding the words in their French originals. As an adult singer Edie has witnessed again and again the strong emotional pull Piaf’s songs have on an audience. Even when they don’t understand the words a crowd will go wild for "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien", one of the most requested numbers at Edie’s shows.
Edie and the band have performed sold-out shows of Under Paris Skies to audiences in the Victoria area and now, due to demand, it will be travelling up-Island allowing new audiences to share Edie’s powerful and expressive performance. “It was a magical evening of music. En son hommage, Edie Daponte présente “sous le ciel de Paris “, une soirée de musique et de spectacle inspirée par Paris. Comme Edith est reconnue mondialement comme une chanteuse nationale française ,Edie chantera nombre de ses émouvantes chansons sentimentales accompagnée de ses musiciens et beaucoup d’autres, entremêlées du talent d’Edie pour divertir son auditoire et interpréter ces chansons. Son interprétation des chansons d’Edith est aussi inspirée par les voyages d’Edie à Paris et son vagabondage dans les rues de Paris.
Évoquant Piaf avec le timbre riche de sa voix et sa façon de captiver son auditoire, Edie tend à recreer, avec ses musiciens expérimentés, l’authentique intime atmosphère d’un théâtre parisien. Sont sur scène avec Edie son collaborateur de longue date Joey Smith à la basse, et des musiciens chers à Vancouver Island, tels Karel Roessingh au piano, Jonathan Eng à la batterie et le très important Aaron Watson à l’accordeon. Tous ces talentueux musiciens ont une longue carrière sur la scène de jazz en B.C.
Edie (appelée Edith à la naissance) a l’impression que Piaf a toujours eu un rôle dans sa vie. Les chansons de Piaf ont accompagné ses premières années même si elle n’en comprenait pas les paroles. Chanteuse, plus tard, Edie a pu se rendre compte à quel point les chansons d’Edith avaient un impact émotionnel sur l’auditoire. Même sans comprendre les paroles de “je ne regrette rien”, qui est une des chansons les plus demandées, le public est enthousiaste.
Edie et ses musiciens ont représenté, à guichet fermé, sous le ciel de Paris à Victoria et ses alentours et, maintenant, ce spectacle très demandé sera en route pour le nord de l’île pour faire partager le talent d’Edie. “C’etait une soirée de musique magique.
