Once numbering an estimated 60-400 million, the beaver was one of the continent&rsquo;s most widespread mammals before Europeans arrived, but 300 years of fur-trade slaughter reduced its population to the low hundred-thousands by 1900.</p>=0D=0A=
<p>In her new book, &ldquo;Once They Were Hats: In Search of the Mighty Beaver,&rdquo; Frances Backhouse examines what happened after we nearly wiped this keystone species off the map, and how we can learn to live with beavers now that they&rsquo;re returning.</p>=0D=0A=
