SUMMARY:Tea & Talk: Covered Lifeboats and Human Safety at Sea
URL:http://www.harbourliving.ca/event/tea-talk-covered-lifeboats-and-human-safety-at-sea/
LOCATION:Maritime Museum of BC :: 744 Douglas Street Victoria,
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
Passenger travel by steamship developed rapidly from around 1850, but with emphasis on speed, and profit rather than passenger (or crew) safely. The industry long resisted change and often failed to use available technology. We follow developments from the 1854 sinking of the Arctic to the quite recent requirement for covered lifeboats. Mandatory lifeboat drills and comfortable transfers by lifeboat tender present an opportunity for cruise passengers to reflect on past tragedies and modern protections.
=0D=0A=
