DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
With special guests Odds
Post-Show Signing

Spirit of the West, a staple of the Canadian music scene for nearly three and a half decades, will make the leap to Nanaimo ahead of three performances at the Commodore Ballroom this spring. As this chapter of their long touring career comes to a close, The Port Theatre Society is pleased to bring you a chance to say goodbye to one of Canada's most stalwart and beloved musical groups.

Fronted by John Mann, the band began in 1983 as an innocent trio of acoustic guitar, flutes and bouzouki and is now a musical and performance powerhouse that features 6 musicians and dozens of instrument changes in a night's worth of timeless and beloved songs. With an original and potent blend of Folk, Celtic, Rock, Pop and Punk, 13 albums to their credit including five gold and three platinum, and a history of extensive touring throughout the western world, Spirit of the West’s legacy has grown to legendary status. They are best known for the drinking song "Home For a Rest", so well known and loved that it is often called ‘Canada’s unofficial national anthem’.

In recognition of their long career, Spirit of the West have been inducted into the Western Canadian Music Association Hall of Fame, have received the National Achievement Award from the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada, and were presented with a star in Vancouver’s ‘Starwalk’ in 2014. The band played Massey Hall in Toronto for the first time ever in June 2015.

Join us as we bid farewell to Spirit of the West with fan favourites such as "And if Venice is Sinking", "Save This House", "Puttin’ Up with the Joneses", the quintessential drinking song "The Crawl", and of course "Home for a Rest".

Opening Act:

Odds were born out of the 1987 Vancouver music scene and made their mark with the Zoo/BMG album Neopolitan in 1991. Warren Zevon ended up with a copy and recognized a kindred spirit - taking Odds on the road as his opening act and backing band. Black humourists, Stax fans and power-pop purveyors, Odds released three more critically-acclaimed albums Bedbugs, Good Weird Feeling and Nest before taking a nine year hiatus. Their albums had broken through and achieved platinum status in their native Canada, along with 6 JUNO nominations, several top 10s, and a few top 40 hits in the USA and around the world. The band returned in 2008 with Cheerleader, featuring the single “My Happy Place” (as heard in the outro for the hit show Corner Gas). The band was named the Vancouver Canucks 'house band' of the 2010 and 2011 NHL playoffs, and were joined by such guests as Rob Baker (The Tragically Hip), Randy Bachman, and Elvis Costello.

Odds have made several shorter-length record releases in recent years. In 2013, Odds released a five-song EP called "The Most Beautiful Place on Earth." Two more five-song EPs "Game Face On" and "Party Party Party" followed in 2014.
=0D=0A=
