SOOKE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - Over sixty musicians come from all over southern Vancouver Island to play in this community orchestra, Players range from 13 to 88 years old, with professional to amateur backgrounds.

=0D=0A=Norman Nelson Conductor & Music Director Norman Nelson studied violin at the Royal College of Music in London. He was Assistant Concertmaster with four of London’s leading orchestras and a founding member of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. He was appointed Concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1965. As a chamber musician, Norman has performed in every major city in Canada and the United States and in Europe, Russia, Japan and China. In 1979, he was appointed Professor of Violin and Chamber Music at the University of Alberta and Leader of the University String Quartet. He was Conductor of the Academy Strings and the University Symphony Orchestra. Norman received the Orchestras Canada Betty Webster Award in 2007 and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Nicholas Fairbank Conductor & Choral Director Nicholas Fairbank holds diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Music and the Royal Canadian College of Organists, and Masters degrees from both the University of Paris and the University of Victoria.
=0D=0A=In addition to his responsibilities with the Sooke Philharmonic, he conducts the Via Choralis chamber choir and is Music Director of First Unitarian Church of Victoria.
