The Cowichan Carbon Busters are sponsoring a Solar Energy Workshop at Duncan’s Heritage Hall in the Island Saving Centre on Oct 25th from 1 to 4 pm.
=0D=0A=

=0D=0A=

Peter Nix, spokesperson for the Carbon Busters, will introduce the workshop speakers. He claims that “once we get past a few myths, you and I will soon drive home in electric cars, re-charge them using our own solar energy panels, and store the electricity in our car battery to be released into the electric grid when needed – just like a BC Hydro water reservoir. An energy revolution is coming”.
=0D=0A=

=0D=0A=

In 2014, solar energy has become profitable for the individual home-owner – costs for installation have decreased by about 90% in the past few years. So citizen-owned local solar energy systems can now make us independent of price-fixing, immensely rich and politically powerful fossil fuel companies. And we will also keep BC Hydro rates low by supplying the electrical grid with cheap electricity for all to share.
=0D=0A=

=0D=0A=

To explain the nature of this revolution, Mr. Nix cited the example of an Australian coal utility which recently paid to sell its own electricity into the grid. Evidently, the increasing supply of cheap solar electricity from home-owners with their own solar panels drove down the price of electricity to below zero for a short period. Yes that’s right, instead of selling electricity for a profit and produced from burning coal, that company had to pay just to get rid of it. “Wow, a revolution indeed” said Mr. Nix.
=0D=0A=

=0D=0A=

The workshop will open with the Mayor of North Cowichan, Jon Lefebure, who already has installed solar panels on his house. It will have technical speakers and contractor booths to explain how to participate and profit, either as home-owners or as members of a planned Solar Cowichan Co-operative. And, there will be a question and answer session to help people understand how to install solar power.
=0D=0A=

=0D=0A=

Mr. Nix stated that “once you install your own solar power, you and I will understand that it is cheaper to buy electric-powered cars and electric home-heating technologies and so stop using fossil fuels that are destroying our climate. This workshop will debunk the following myths:
=0D=0A=

=0D=0A=

Myth #1: Solar energy is expensive. Nope, you can now make a profit by installing solar energy compared with fossil fuel systems or even BC Hydro rates. Cowichan gets more sun than Germany and that country is fast converting to solar power.
=0D=0A=

=0D=0A=

Myth #2: Canada needs the oil sands to drive our national economy forward. Nope, more Canadians work in the beer industry than work in the oil sands. Fossil fuels ship money to Alberta or Texas; solar energy will create jobs in our own community.
=0D=0A=

=0D=0A=

Myth #3: Fossil fuels are indispensable. Nope, electric cars are fast becoming more affordable than gas guzzlers, and electric heat pumps provide cheaper home heating than oil or gas furnaces (and yes, wood burning is bad for our neighbour’s health).
=0D=0A=

=0D=0A=

Myth #4: Individuals are powerless to stop climate change. Nope, due mostly to public pressure on our politicians and corporations, the Keystone and Enbridge oil pipelines, with immense help from the 1st Nations, are very likely dead ducks.
=0D=0A=

=0D=0A=

Believe me said Mr. Nix, “I know what a dead duck looks like - as a biologist who once worked for oil sands companies, I saw lots floating on bitumen-contaminated tailings ponds in northern Alberta. Who needs that?”
=0D=0A=

=0D=0A=

So come to our workshop; bust these myths and get practical knowledge on how to install and profit from renewable solar energy – contact cowichancarbonbusters@shaw.ca.
=0D=0A=
