Described as a dominant forage fish, a backbone of the coast and a foundation species, Pacific herring play a key role in coastal ecosystems. Each year, in one of the coast’s most spectacular natural events, herring gather to spawn along Pacific coastlines. The water turns chalk white, entire kelp forests sink and marine predators, including whales, sea lions, and birds, aggregate to feast. =0D=0A=
