SUMMARY:Seeking the Sacred: A Musical Feast for Pipe Organ and Choir
URL:http://www.harbourliving.ca/event/seeking-the-sacred-a-musical-feast-for-pipe-organ-and-choir/
LOCATION:St John the Divine, Victoria :: 1611 Quadra St Victoria,
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
The Linden Singers of Victoria seek the sacred through contemporary classical music with works for pipe organ and choir, all of which have been published in the past 21 years. Morten Lauridsen’s requiem, Lux Aeterna, first performed in Los Angeles in 1997 will be a highlight, especially given the composer’s current popularity and the fact that he is a neighbour with a home in the San Juan Islands.
=0D=0A=

The five movements of Lux Aeterna are “based on various references to light from sacred Latin texts . . . all supporting an earthbound spirit seeking not only mercy, understanding, and consolation but also renewal.” Just published in 2014, The Seabury Mass, by Welsh composer Paul Mealor will be publicly performed in Victoria for the first time. Mealor shot to prominence in 2011 when his Ubi Caritas was performed at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
=0D=0A=

The Linden Singers will, in addition, perform equally beautiful and evocative pieces includ-ing Jonathan Dove’s Missa Brevis (2009), Carlyle Sharpe’s Laudate Nomen (2000), an exu-berant setting of Psalm 135:1-5, 19-21, and Latvian composer Peteris Vasks’ Dona Nobis Pacem (1996), a call for peace after years of Soviet domination that still resonates with many today.
=0D=0A=

The Linden Singers, under Music Director, Brian Wismath, is pleased to welcome guest organist David Stratkauskas, who is also Music Director and Organist at St John the Divine. Playing the largest and finest organ in BC, David will showcase the organ as a versatile and exciting instrument capable of doing justice to many repertoires.
