“Wearable Art - from Traditional to Contemporary” is the theme for the 11th Cowichan Aboriginal Festival of Film & Art.
=0D=0A=“It's a theme that has sparked the imagination of the artists we are showcasing this year, as it encompasses history and tradition but also opens the door to personal expression and exploration.” says Festival Director Louise McMurray.
=0D=0A=Our curator for the art show, Charlene George, an internationally acclaimed Coast Salish artist, is a great example of one who is well grounded in her traditional world, who is continuously exploring contemporary applications through fabric art. “This timing for a show like this is perfect as story telling is coming into its own strength again. Within all communities what you are wearing is becoming more and more an expression of self, from tattoos to jewellery, to clothing and accessories.” says George. This is a must see show for those that are looking for unique, or traditional, creative items for everyday and special events. Other artists that will be showcased this year include Coast Salish artists, Doug LaFortune, Darryl Charles, May Sam, Stella Johnny, Stuart Pagaduan, Angela Marston, Marion Underwood, Charlene George, Carolyne Memnook, Salish Fusion (Sylvia Olsen, Joni Olsen & Adam Olsen) , Kwakiutl: Jaime Gentry, Brent Campbell, Debbie Hunt Inuit: Stephanie Papik, Tobias Tomlynson, Métis: Lynn Hemry, Barb Hulme, Carole Gremier & the Métis Association. They will present pieces, traditional and contemporary, created with fabric, jewelry, beading, leather work, knitting, felting, cedar. We are presenting a number of special workshops, presentations and films as part of the Wearable Art Show. Her family grew from these roots and have developed a thriving business that applies Coast Salish inspired designs to new applications, both knitted and felted.
=0D=0A=Sylvia is the author of two books that have brought out much of the story of Coast Salish knitting and knitters, the highly acclaimed “Working with Wool- A Coast Salish Legacy and the Cowichan Sweater” and her more recently published book currently on the BC Best Sellers Book List, “Knitting Stories”. Adam, her son, member of the Green Party, continues in the knitting tradition and Joni, her daughter, is the creative drive behind Salish Fusion. Together, they will present their story.
