DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:<p>To mark World Refugee Day, June 20, 2016 and to build understanding of the 8 member Karen Refugee family soon to begin a new life in Qualicum, Qualicum Refugee Sponsorship Group will showcase two highly regarded documentaries: Karen Refugees: Fleeing Burma's Forgotten&nbsp; War (CBC/Icarus Films) and moving to Mars: a million miles from Burma (Coded Pictures/Worldview). Viewing and discussion will be followed by informal conversation and refreshments. <br /><br />This event is free. All are welcome.<br /><br /><strong>Film 1:</strong><br /><br /><em>Karen Refugees: Fleeing Burma's Forgotten War&nbsp;</em> (Icarus Films, 2006; Canadian Broadcasting Corporation: Patrick Brown, reporter))<br /><br />The film Karen Refugees: Fleeing Burma&rsquo;s Forgotten War looks at the Karen situation in Burma and Thailand through the eyes of &amp;quot;backpack medics&amp;quot; and then follows one Karen woman and her family as they journey from Thailand to North America.&nbsp; It was originally broadcast as a segment of "The National" on CBC.<br /><br /><strong>Film 2:</strong><br /><br /><em>Moving to Mars: A Million Miles from Burma</em> (Worldview, 2009; Mat Whitecross, Director; Karen Katz, Producer)<br /><br />Moving to Mars follows two refugee families from Burma over the course of a year that will change their lives completely. Forced from their homeland by the repressive military junta, they have lived in a Thai refugee camp, some for almost twenty years. A resettlement scheme offers them the chance of a new life; but their new home, in the British city of Sheffield, will be different to everything they&rsquo;ve ever known.&nbsp; This documentary was an award-winner in the 46th Annual Chicago International Film Festival. "a moving story - beautifully told" highlights the differences and universalities of human experience.</p>
