This event is a month-long display of art (paintings and photography) depicting bridges anywhere in the world. About 25 local artists’ work will hang in a popular local café—Moka House Coffee—in Cook Street Village.There is also a silent auction (cash or cheque only) to raise funds for the Vancouver Island School of Art.
=0D=0A=The reason for selecting this theme is to celebrate the building of the new Blue Bridge in downtown Victoria and to showcase the work of local artists—some well known in the community, others starting out.
=0D=0A=The work on display, all for sale with all the proceeds going to the artists (no commissions are taken), ranges from oil on canvas, watercolour, acrylic, collage, pastel and photographs printed using a variety of technologies.
=0D=0A=Some of the history of the Blue Bridge will also be displayed for educational purposes. We know that four different bridges, for example, have spanned the narrows between the Inner Harbour and Upper Harbour connecting Johnson Street on the east shore with Esquimalt Road on the west. The current bridge is Canada's largest single-leaf, rolling bascule bridge.
=0D=0A=The title of the display was selected to emphasize that bridges are more than a means to move cars and people. They connect different parts of the community bringing people together to explore their differences and similarities. Art brings people together in the same way. So, art depicting bridges is a celebration of two ways in which we build community.
