March 30: Studying Earthquakes of the Salish Sea – From First Nations Traditions to Satellite Data

Southwest British Columbia is one of the most seismically active regions of Canada. Here, small earthquakes occur every day, potentially damaging earthquakes occur (on average) every few decades, and some of the world’s largest earthquakes occur just west of Vancouver Island centuries apart. The science of earthquakes is evolving rapidly, thanks to modern technologies, faster computers, and more instruments on the ground. This presentation highlights the earthquake history of our region, some advances in earthquake science, and how this new knowledge is used to help protect us from future earthquakes.

John Cassidy is a research scientist with Natural Resources Canada and Head of the Earthquake Seismology Section. He is based at the Pacific Geoscience Centre in North Saanich, and has been studying earthquakes and earthquake hazards in southwest BC for more than 30 years. He works closely with engineers, emergency managers, and all levels of government to help ensure that the latest earthquake science is available to help make our communities safer.
