URL:http://www.harbourliving.ca/event/nordic-roots-a-swedish-christmas-concert/
LOCATION:Capitol Theatre :: 4904 Argyle Street Port Alberni, V9Y 1V7
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Local artist Gittan Klemetsrud, a Portal Players’ member, approached the board of directors with a proposal for this concert to share a piece of her culture and traditions and to bring together the youth talent that we have in this community. Ms. Klemetsrud secured the support of Sarah Falls to act as the Musical Director, and with the involvement of students from the ADSS Grade 9 Jazz Band and the EJ Dunn Choir they have put together an evening of traditional music and culture.=0D=0A=
The name, “Sankta Lucia”, or Saint Lucy in English, shares a root with the Latin word for “light” (“lux”). Lucy's feastday comes during Advent. Her feast originally coincided with the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, so her feastday has become a festival of light in Scandinavian countries, with their long dark winters. There, a young girl dressed in a white dress and a red sash carries palms and wears a crown or wreath of candles on her head. In Sweden, girls dressed as Lucy carry rolls and cookies in procession as songs are sung. It is said in Sweden that to vividly celebrate St. Lucy's Day will help one live the long winter days with enough light.=0D=0A=
