In this year of political turmoil wouldn’t it be great just to forget all that – to take a break, breathe deeply and relax? Well, a concert of Early Music would be just the antidote and who better than the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra to provide for that! This fall the NCO will perform an all-Baroque concert titled “Basically Baroque”.
=0D=0A=The program features guest horn player, Keon Birney, to play Mozart’s “Concerto in E-Flat for Horn & Orchestra” KV 447. As well, the Orchestra – directed by Karl Rainer - will play Bononcini’s “Sinfonia” from the oratorio, Il Giosue, Purcell’s “Abdelazer Suite”, Vivaldi’s “Concerto for Strings in D” RV121, and 2 works by J.S. Bach; “Suite for String Orchestra” and “Little Fugue in G Minor”.
=0D=0A=Originally from Calgary, Keon Birney has been a core member of the Vancouver Island Symphony for the past sixteen years. He is a teacher and composer and has played with the VSO, the Vancouver Metropolitan Opera, and the Kamloops and Okanagan Symphony Orchestras. His compositions have been performed by the VSO, the Calgary Philharmonic and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
=0D=0A=The Horn Concerto is the 3rd of 4 concertos for horn written by Mozart. written for hornist, Joseph Leutgeb, it is about 16 minutes in duration.The Abdelazer Suite was written as incidental music for “The Moor’s Revenge”, a popular revenge tragedy written by a woman, Aphra Behn. The Suite comprises 9 movements all with a sense of dance that is so characteristic of Baroque music. Vivaldi’s RV121 is notable for the lovely slow movement, in which the violins seem distraught with operatic grief. The outer movements are typically energetic – with some unexpected modulations in the final movement. Bononcini’s Sinfonia frames the oratorio that describes the siege of Gibeon in advance of the Battle of Jericho. Bach’s Little Fugue was written for organ but has been arranged also for strings: the Suite is a collection of familiar themes.
