Merry Monday, a south-end Christmas favourite has begun to spread its “Glow” island wide. The last Monday before Christmas The Village at Fulford Harbour comes alive with Christmas spirit. With last-minute shopping, food and beverage specials, and of course the sing along with Valdy in the mercantile parking lot. This event has a “Glow” of its own with its genuine community spirit.

About Merry Monday

For as long as most people in Fulford Village can remember, “Merry Monday” has taken place the Monday before Christmas. Led by legendary Canadian folk singer Valdy, this traditional sing-along accompanied by locally produced hot apple cider and loads of warm fuzzy cheer, attracts not only locals but ferry goers from Sidney & Victoria. The close-knit South Salt Spring community has been organizing the event for the past 25 years.

According to Valdy, who has participated in every Merry Monday since its inception, the community leads the way. “I lead the singing but it’s the community that is the star every year. It’s the best feeling of the year, as it’s the one time we come together in voice.” Valdy adds, “It’s truly a special time and we look forward to hot apple cider and going through the songbook that’s printed in the local paper.”

The tradition has changed a bit with the times too. The original idea came from Bruce Patterson, owner of what was once “Patterson’s Market” or the general store in the heart of Fulford Village. That business is now the Salt Spring Mercantile, and they have continued the long-standing tradition by donating the time and effort to create another “Merry Monday” this year.

Visitors coming to Salt Spring on the Swartz Bay ferry are advised to come for the event as foot passengers and leave your car in the parking lot. A warm welcome awaits you! Come, bring you own mug and enjoy hot apple cider, cocoa brewing, chestnuts roasting, a fire going, and an opportunity to sing with Valdy & get some last minute shopping done in some of the best shops on Salt Spring. Then hop the ferry back having experienced one of the best holiday traditions on Salt Spring Island. “Get your Glow On!” this Monday, December 22. You’ll be glad you made the trip.
