This talk will explore the linguistic nuances and consequences of Victoria’s 'Very British' history and popular ideology. It will address issues of settlement, isolation, and educational policy in Victoria, and how these are reconciled with Victoria’s Canadian positioning in the linguistic landscape.=0D=0A=

Alexandra D’Arcy, Assistant Professor of Linguistics and Director of the Sociolinguistics Research Lab at the University of Victoria, specializes in variation and change in English dialects. She has published on the effects of age, gender, education, and ethnicity on language practice, and has presented on these topics at a number of international venues. She is particularly interested in language ideology and the ways in which it negatively (and not necessarily correctly) attributes causation and explanation to ongoing change in spoken language. Her current project investigates the origins and development of English in Victoria, and draws on a range of archival and contemporary documents and recordings from Victorians, 1850 to the present.=0D=0A=

In celebration of the University of Victoria’s 50th Anniversary we are pleased to bring you an expanded 50th Anniversary Deans’ Lecture Series for 2012/2013. The series is presented in partnership with the Greater Victoria Public Library, the 50th Anniversary Organizational Team, the Division of Continuing Studies and the Faculties of Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Graduate Studies, Human and Social Development, Humanities, Law, Science and Social Sciences.=0D=0A=

Daytime Lectures are held at the Greater Victoria Public Library, Central Branch, 735 Broughton St. Parking is available underground and you are welcome to bring a bag lunch.=0D=0A=

Evening Lectures are held at the UVic Legacy Art Gallery, 630 Yates St. Parking is available in nearby lots. No food or drink is allowed in the gallery.=0D=0A=

Please note that registration will open on August 8th. Online registration is NOT available for the Dean’s Lecture Series. Admission to the lectures is free but you must register by calling 250-472-4747 so we can guarantee you a seat.
