DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Internationally acclaimed alto sax player PJ Perry is bringing the talent he’s honed alongside such jazz legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles and Henry Mancini to VIU. =0D=0A=
“He’s the Charlie Parker of Canada – his talent is just monumental,” says VIU Jazz Program instructor Pat Coleman, who first met and played music with Perry as a young man in Edmonton, where they both grew up. “He is quite a character.”=0D=0A=
Playing VIU’s intimate theatre venue, Perry will be accompanied by local musicians and Jazz Program faculty members Ken Lister on bass and Hans Verhoeven on drums.=0D=0A=
Perry is known for his bebop-influenced style of play, and is considered one of Canada’s finest saxophonists. With a passion for music and jazz that spans 60 years, he’s been active across Canada and internationally as a studio musician, jazz soloist, concert performer, and recording artist. =0D=0A=
Perry’s career has taken him far beyond that Alberta dance hall. He has shared the spotlight with Michel LeGrand and Dizzy Gillespie, and as lead saxophonist on the highly successful 1980s TV series In Concert, Perry played for such luminaries as Ray Charles, Henry Mancini, Aretha Franklin, and Tom Jones.=0D=0A=
Recently, Perry was a featured soloist on the hit 2010 Broadway production of Come Fly Away, highlighting the songs of Frank Sinatra and the choreography of Twyla Tharp. =0D=0A=
Coleman looks forward to visiting with his old friend when he’s in town for the concert, and says he’ll enjoy an opportunity to introduce the jazz great to students and interested members of the public at a workshop Feb. 5 from 11:30 to 1 pm in the Choral Room at VIU, Building 320, Room 105.=0D=0A=
Tickets are available only the night of performance -- doors open at 6 pm.=0D=0A=
