Hugelkultur (“hill culture” in German) is an organic gardening technique that makes use of wood’s capacity to act as a sponge to soak up and hold water, then release it to the surrounding soil as it dries out. Ideal for our rain-in-winter, drought-in-summer climate, hugelkultur will make your garden more visually interesting, more energy efficient and more diverse.=0D=0A=

We will go over the theory behind hugelkultur at the beginning of this intensive and then get out into the garden to practice building one in one of the Centre’s veggie garden plots!=0D=0A=

As Site Manager, Alysha Punnett practices organic gardening and permaculture in the Compost Education Centre’s gardens. Originally from the arid mountains of the Okanagan, a passion for implementing sustainable living strategies led her to the Island to complete a BSc. in Environmental Management, a Permaculture Design Certificate (Seven Ravens Permaculture Academy) and an Organic Master Gardener Certificate (Gaia College). This practical education inspired her to get her hands dirty andlearn how to rehabilitate soil to grow her own food and become more self-reliant. She enjoys passing on her experience and knowledge by teaching workshops at the Centre as well as out in the community.
