Multi-media talents of Christian Tatonetti on display in fundraiser

Musician Christian Tatonetti sees life as it is on Pandora Avenue and hes unsure why more isnt being done.

A native of Montreal who now lives in Victoria, by way of Salt Spring Island, he studies classical voice regularly at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. He often passes by, and mingles with, the locals congregated at Our Place and in the green space in the 900-block of Pandora.

(Since coming here in 2005) Ive been a fan of what Our Place does and Ive always wanted to help, Tatonetti said.

I see it each day I study at the Conservatory and I see how it is talked about in the media and in our lives. We should include everybody if were talking about neighbourhood.

This Friday (Sept. 24), Tatonetti the musician is combining his talents as a visual artist and, with the help of guests, is hosting a sitar music and classical vocal and piano repertoire at the Conservatorys Wood Hall.

The entire proceeds of the evening go to Our Place. As an incentive to concert goers, Tatonetti is making 44 of his photo prints and paintings available free one each, on a first-come, first-served basis to anyone who donates $30 or more to the cause as their admission. Some of the photos are my favourites going back to my time in Montreal, and others are fairly recent.

Tatonetti and Wilson Mendes will greet guests with an ambience of sound on sitar and khim (a Thai hammered dulcimer), respectively. From there Tatonettis many talents will be on display.

Hell sing a selection of Italian and English baroque compositions and arias, accompanied by pianist Graeme Wilkinson. From there hell launch into a comic, mock dramatic vocal piece entitled Belle-Mre, by Victoria-based composer Sylvia Rickard.

Tatonetti studied photography before moving to Salt Spring at 24 years old. Thats where he self taught himself to sing and play sitar.

Now 39, Tatonetti has plenty of art and musical experience to draw from for Fridays performance and exhibition.

He hopes the art show will prompt people to walk in to Our Place and check out what is happening there instead of avoiding the 900-block of Pandora altogether.

Admission is by donation. Tatonettis art collection is up for viewing at Our Place until the time of the concert, 7 p.m.
