DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
The cavalry’s coming – musically speaking – as Yariv Aloni conducts the GVYO as they perform Light Cavalry Overture by Franz von Suppé, complete with bugle, fanfare, and cantering horses. Reynolds Band joins the orchestra for Longfield’s Fantasia on the English hymn tune Kingsfold. The concert’s military theme is taken up again in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite, which, despite its pastoral-sounding name, was originally penned for military band. The music incorporates traditional melodies such as Seventeen Come Sunday, My Bonny Boy and John Barleycorn. Capping off the concert will be the wonderful Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar, performed by the GVYO. BBC Music and Countryfile readers recently voted Elgar their favourite British composer; his Enigma Variations, a delight of the English repertoire, brims with humour, inventiveness, and poignancy.

For 29 years the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra – expressive, focused, and adventurous - has brought symphonic sounds to thousands of music lovers, young and old, in communities from Bamfield to Whitehorse and Haida Gwaii. In rehearsals, sectionals, and workshops, the orchestra’s 60 players explore symphonic style, develop ensemble and performance skills, and build lasting friendships. In the rehearsal hall and on the concert stage, the GVYO brings music to life as only young people can, with verve, enthusiasm and inexhaustible energy, orchestrating joy for themselves and their audience alike.

Yariv Aloni in July 2010, having served as Associate Music Director since 2002. As violist he has performed and recorded worldwide. Along with performing and teaching and leading the GVYO, he holds the posts of Music Director of the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria and the Victoria Chamber Orchestra.
