The GVYO opens its 29th season with a sparkling collection of musical treasures from Austria, France, Romania, and Bohemia.  The instantly-recognized Coriolanus Overture by Beethoven seethes with tragedy, and is a central work of the composer’s “heroic” period.  The music of Bizet’s L’Arlésienne Suites evokes the beautiful Provençal countryside, while foreshadowing the pathos of lost love. Romanian Rhapsody No. 2 by Enescu is a rarely heard gem of impassioned majesty.  Má Vlast: Vltava (The Moldau) is perhaps Smetana’s best-loved work: the symphonic poem describes the beautiful Czech river as it flows from the Bohemian Forest toward Prague, taking in along the way a forest hunt, a peasant wedding, and water nymphs bathing in the moonlight!

For 29 years the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra – expressive, focused, and adventurous - has brought symphonic sounds to thousands of music lovers, young and old, in communities from Bamfield to Whitehorse and Haida Gwaii.  In rehearsals, sectionals, and workshops, the orchestra’s 60 players explore centuries of symphonic style, develop ensemble and performance skills, and build lasting friendships.  In the rehearsal hall and on the concert stage, the GVYO brings music to life as only young people can, with verve, enthusiasm and inexhaustible energy, orchestrating joy for themselves and their audience alike.

Yariv Aloni was appointed Music Director of GVYO in July 2010, having served as Associate Music Director since 2002.  As violist he has performed and recorded worldwide.  Along with performing and teaching and leading the GVYO, he holds the posts of Music Director of the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria and the Victoria Chamber Orchestra.
