Longtime member of the VCM Jazz Faculty, Gergana Velinova is releasing her 3rd and latest CD 'The Thief' & is celebrating the release in fine fashion - with a performance at the Alix Goolden Hall. This sublime musical event will feature Gergana and her band (comprised of the creme de la creme of the Victoria Jazz scene) plus as a nod to her Eastern European roots a special appearance by members of The Victoria Symphony.=0D=0A=

The concert will feature Gergana's original jazz compositions as featured on "The Thief" including a tribute to Elis Regina in Portuguese and a wild Bulgarian Folk Song improvisation.=0D=0A=

9 months in the making - a true labour of love -"The Thief" was produced by Misha Piatigorsky and Joby Baker and featured Misha Piatagrosky, Neil Swainson, Gordon Clements and Willard Dyson.=0D=0A=

As special guests the concert will also feature Gergana's second year full time Camosun Program jazz voice students on backing vocals, Shanna Dance, Aurora Scott and Claire Coupland.=0D=0A=

Vocalist, conductor, and music educator Gergana Velinova has inspired audiences around the world with her wide-ranging artistic talents. An award-winning performer, she has enjoyed an international career working in such diverse musical genres as jazz, modern, classical and gospel. During her years as a fixture of New York City's avant-garde music scene, she formed the group Ensemble Gergana with musicians of diverse musical back grounds performing improvised, free-style jazz inspired by her original poetry.=0D=0A=

With a repertoire extending from Mozart and Stravinsky to Berlin, Mingus and Jobim, Gergana has shared the stage with many accomplished artists such as Bob Moses, Neil Swainson, Don Thompson, Misha Piatigorsky, Willard Dyson, Gord Clements, Brian McWhorter, Keith Ganz, Walter Martella and Eric Dozier to name a few.=0D=0A=

A native of Bulgaria, after graduating in classical guitar from Sofia School of Music in 1993, Gergana left for the Untied States upon acceptance into the voice department at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. She continued her education at the Longy School of Music in Boston, and in 1998 received a Master Degree in both Classical-Contemporary and Jazz Voice performance.=0D=0A=

She has studied voice with world-renowned interpreter of contemporary classical music Ms. Lucy Shelton and Metropolitan Opera soloist Madame Stefka Evstatieva.=0D=0A=

Gergana has been on faculty of the VCM Jazz Department since 2007 in the position of Vocal Jazz and Contemporary styles instructor, Conductor of the VCM Vocal Jazz Ensemble as well as Musicianship instructor. Gergana also teaches at the VCM Summer Jazz Academy and the Viva Voice Academy and divides her time between the US and Canada, performing, conducting and facilitating vocal workshops. =0D=0A=
