DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
This Thursday CHLY 101.7 FM jazz Rhythm'a'ning radio presents pianist Benoît Delbecq (France), Clarinetist François Houle (Vancouver, Canada), trombonist Samuel Blaser (Switzerland) and drummer Gerry Hemingway (USA) with their group Fourth Landscape and Because She Hoped at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music at 7pm June 25th at 375 Selby Street.
=0D=0A=

Pianist Benoît Delbecq has won a prestigious double award at the 2010 Grand Prix International du Disque (Académie Charles Cros, the French Grammy Awards) and his trio CD «The Sixth Jump » (Songlines) was listed in the New York Times top ten jazz/pop records of 2010. The New York Times writer Nate Chinen has referred to Delbecq as “unconventional and…brilliant” . Delbecq is a prepared piano specialist and uses the art of the fascinating prepared piano with exciting improvisatory spontaneous jazz composition.
=0D=0A=

The prepared piano involves placing/fixing objects on the strings of the piano to get compelling and wonderfully uncommon sounds out of the piano. When prepared, the instrument does not sound like a piano anymore, but rather wooden or gong like or metallic and mysterious mystical percussive timbres and textures emerge. Benoît Delbecq is one of the very few artists and specialists to use the prepared piano in improvisatory jazz. Delbecq’s influences include Gyorgy Ligeti, John Cage, Steve Lacy, and ambient electronica.“Utterly fascinating.” (The Telegraph)
=0D=0A=

“To transform the tone colour of the piano, I use mostly curved bits of dried wood and erasers from all kind of geographical origins. I collect them along the tours! I started it as a kid with a set of mallets I built myself, but it became serious around 1988 when I first practiced György Ligeti's Etudes Pour Piano (1985): I used prepared notes to reveal the multiple "hidden" speeds and some articulations better. Soon after I listened to and performed John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes. It felt like there was a door wide open to research new directions at the piano, and I started to write tunes that were including this idea of improvised polymetrics, with combinations of rhythms and melodic fragments expressed in different layers. It can get somewhat trance-like…in a way, I'm looking for some kind of imaginary folklore.”- Benoît Delbecq from Do the Math with interview host Ethan Iverson.
=0D=0A=

Montreal–born Vancouver saxophonist François Houle has won the coveted Downbeat Rising Star Clarinetist Award twice in 2008 and 2013. Houle has collaborated with composers such as John Oliver and Paul Dolden and top performing artists such as France’s Joëlle Léandre and Benoît Delbecq. He has worked with a who’s who of the Vancouver Creative and New Music scenes. From Claude Ranger, Roger Baird, Tony Wilson, Vancouver New Music, Vancouver Pro Musica and is a founding member of the Standing Wave ensemble.
=0D=0A=

Both Delbecq and Houle have worked very closely together in creative recording collaborations and are beautifully complimentary together when they perform. They communicate intuitively and are exceptional together and the musical interplay hints at Canadian and European French influences and impressionistic textures.
=0D=0A=

American drummer extraordinaire Gerry Hemingway is also a creative composer and has won the highly prized and sought after Guggenheim Award. He was a member of the Anthony Braxton quartet for eleven years from 1983 - 1994. In 2007 Hemingway and Anthony Braxton had a historic reunion as a duo. In the late eighties Hemingway began performing with the Reggie Workman Ensemble that included Oliver Lake, Jeanne Lee, Marilyn Crispell, John Purcell and Don Byron amongst others. Hemingway was a core member of Anthony Davis' Episteme Ensemble and has performed with Cecil Taylor, Derek Bailey, Leo Smith, Oliver Lake, Kenny Wheeler, Frank Gratkowski, George Lewis, John Butcher, John Cale, Hank Roberts and many more.
=0D=0A=

Switzerland’s Samuel Blaser has won the Benny Golson Prize and Downbeat’s Shaun Brady says about Blaser, "...brilliantly realized...recontextualizing centuries-old themes and melodies via modern improvisation, more an act of resurrection than archaeology."
=0D=0A=

The rave reviews on Blaser from the press keep rolling in, making Blaser in high demand in Europe both as a leader and a side player. While recording and touring with his own groups and collaborating in other leaders' ensembles, Blaser as an in demand top European trombonist on Whirlwind Recordings says, "The world of music fascinates me to no end, and I’m determined to take one journey after another with my instrument and keep on working," "It’s all about discovery and communicating new ideas. “
=0D=0A=
