From humble beginnings in abject poverty to one of the most beloved and controversial figures in Argentinian history, the rock opera "Evita" (by famed West End duo Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice) tells the true rags to riches story of Eva Duarte (later Peron). Beginning life in rural Argentina, Duarte made her way to the big city - Buenos Aires - where she used whatever methods necessary to claw her way up the social ladder, from mistress of a popular singer to model to radio personality to actress and, ultimately, becoming the wife of the powerful military commander Juan Peron and aiding in his rise to the presidency of Argentina. Evita was beloved by the common people and despised by the military and aristocratic elite. Her impact on Argentinian history, including the controversial Eva Peron Foundation, is praised by some and denigrated by others. Webber & Rice do not back away from the complexities of the figure of Evita, telling the story through their now iconic musical score, including classics such as "Don't Cry For Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall," and "You Must Love Me" (written for the 1996 Madonna movie version and subsequently included in the 2012 Broadway revival with Ricky Martin).
=0D=0A=
