Courtenay, BC – If you ever walk into the Courtenay Recreation Centre on a =0D=0A=
Wednesday night, the first thing you’ll often hear is the sound of something being =0D=0A=
“smacked around”. Upon closer inspection, the prevailing sound is accompanied by two =0D=0A=
extremely sweaty and typically out of breath players moving in small quarters hitting a =0D=0A=
little squishy black ball, using a chess-like strategies to make a winning shot. =0D=0A=
The game of squash heralds all the qualities of healthy living – the continuous nature of =0D=0A=
the game requires a lot of stop and start requiring both speed and endurance. Not =0D=0A=
unlike chess, squash requires players to be patient in their attack coupled with quickly =0D=0A=
thinking on their feet. Camaraderie and laughter is always at its best at the courts; =0D=0A=
many of us moan and groan about missed shots, while our opponents raise their =0D=0A=
glasses and gloat about their winning drop shot. =0D=0A=
The Comox Valley Squash Club is home to over 200 players; a mixture of beginner and =0D=0A=
seasoned squash players. There are even a few well-done squash players! April =0D=0A=
typically marks the end of the season for most local players and the Comox Valley =0D=0A=
Squash Club is gearing up to host its traditional Easter Bunny Squash Tournament from =0D=0A=
April 3 to 6, 2014. It’s known in the squash community as “the best Island tournament” =0D=0A=
and many players travel to enjoy the competition, great food and entertainment and the =0D=0A=
welcoming community of the Comox Valley. =0D=0A=
The squash club has partnered with St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation to raise funds to =0D=0A=
support the purchase of sleep over chairs for the Birthing Rooms at St. Joseph’s =0D=0A=
Hospital. =0D=0A=
“St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation is very grateful to the Comox Valley Squash Club to =0D=0A=
have the opportunity to partner with this event” says Lynn Dashkewytch, Executive =0D=0A=
Director of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation. “It takes support from the community =0D=0A=
to keep the hospital on the cutting edge of equipment and patient comfort items.” =0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
There are many ways to get involved: =0D=0A=
 Support a local squash player and the Hospital Foundation by purchasing a raffle =0D=0A=
ticket to win great prizes – two tickets anywhere WestJet flies, a Whistler Golf =0D=0A=
package worth $1,300 and an original painting by Vancouver Island artist =0D=0A=
Maureen Maryka worth $600. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Hospital =0D=0A=
Foundation or by emailing cvsquash@gmail.com.
