DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
The fifth meeting of the 16-17 academic year; the Department of Greek and Roman Studies welcomes Professor Bjørn Lovén (SAXO Institute, University of Copenhagen) who will present a lecture entitled, "A Tale of Two Sunken Harbour Cities: The Harbours of Ancient Athens and Corinth."
=0D=0A=

In ancient times as today, the sea served as a medium for cultures to connect with a wider world through trade, colonization, and military conquest. In the mountainous, peninsular and island-strewn regions of ancient Greek civilization, the vast majority of trade, communication and exchange of knowledge took place on the seas, in anchorages, and in harbour areas.
=0D=0A=

Ancient harbour settlements evolved into focal points of human interaction and served as umbilical cords, as it were, to the mainland. This lecture will explore the archaeology and history of two very different ancient harbour types, focusing on the harbours of Corinth and Athens.
=0D=0A=

The Classical Association of Vancouver Island is UVic’s organization for people interested in the Greek and Roman worlds. Monthly lectures by local and international scholars take place at UVic. Everyone is welcome.
=0D=0A=
