The Canadian Society for Asbestos Victims (CanSAV.ca) was formed in 2008 to provide education, support and referral services to people impacted by asbestos related diseases (ARDs).=0D=0A=

More workers die every year from ARDs than any other cause. According to a UBC study commissioned by Worksafe BC, (Mesothelioma Awareness and Compensation in BC, Oct 2010) there may be as many as 300 deaths every year in BC alone. Yet only 1 in 3 victims applies for compensation.=0D=0A=

CanSAV founder Bob Katzko states, “Having lost my father to mesothelioma in 2004 and my personal experience since then, I know that many people impacted by ARDs need help in understanding the special services available to them.=0D=0A=

It is CanSAV’s experience that many patients are sent home without the full knowledge of the palliative services available to them. As well, local hospice societies and CanSAV’s own peer-to-peer support services may help them through a very difficult time. There are many end-of-life decisions that need to be made around finances as well. Because many ARDs are recognized as occupational diseases, compensation may be available. It isn’t enough to recommend that a patient contact a provincial compensation board. Patients need to be informed of all areas of compensation for which they could qualify - Veteran Affairs, US Bankruptcy Trusts, and Pension Canada to name a few. CanSAV has also helped canadian victims who worked in the UK and as far as South Africa.=0D=0A=
