This summer, the Qualicum Beach Museum is hosting “Broken Promises,” a bilingual travelling exhibition designed by the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre and the University of Victoria’s Landscapes of Injustice research project. This exhibit explores the dispossession and internment of Japanese Canadians during World War Two, illuminating the loss of home and the struggle for justice of one racially marginalized community.
Witness the stories of seven Japanese Canadian families who experienced the dispossession and internment first-hand, including former residents of Qualicum Beach and Deep Bay. Through these seven narrators, learn about life for Japanese Canadians in Canada before the war, the administration of their lives during and after the war ends, and how legacies of dispossession continue to this day
