Background: This exhibit is created in partnership with the Surfrider Foundation and will be a precursor to the Robert Bateman Centre’s 2017 Urban Sanctuary Project – the one hundred year celebration of the Migratory Bird Sanctuary spanning the Inner Harbour to Esquimalt Lagoon.
=0D=0A=

Proceeds and sales will be used to support the work of the Surfrider and the Robert Bateman Foundations. Urban Sanctuary Project: Over a century ago, with the rise of bird banding, birders all over North America were noticing a significant decrease in birds. Further investigation of the decrease showed that extreme and unregulated harvesting of birds was the main culprit. Therefore, in 1917 the Migratory Bird Convention Act was put in place to protect the migratory birds and their nesting habitat against such destructive human activities.
=0D=0A=

The year 2017 will mark a century of essential migratory bird protection, and with that the Urban Sanctuary project was established to commemorate this influential event.
