SUMMARY:Boulevard Gardening Workshop
URL:http://www.harbourliving.ca/event/boulevard-gardening-workshop-2016/
LOCATION:Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre :: 1216 North Park Street Victoria,
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
In July, 2014, Victoria’s City Council unanimously approved “Interim Boulevard Gardening Guidelines” officially permitting property owners (and their helpers) to garden on the boulevards adjacent to their properties. Tenants and condo dwellers are also permitted to garden on the boulevard, with the informed consent of the adjacent property owner.

In this workshop, learn the basic techniques, benefits and pitfalls associated with boulevard gardening, with close consideration given to the Interim Guidelines themselves. Also learn about the Compost Education Centre’s match-making service, which aims to put boulevard gardeners needing space in touch with boulevard gardens needing maintenance. This workshop is part botanical, part political. We aim to bring new meaning to the “City of Gardens”.

Presenter Bio: Michael Large is a local lawyer and boulevard gardener. He reworked the City of Vancouver’s “Boulevard Gardening Guidelines” to create draft Interim Boulevard Gardening Guidelines for the City of Victoria, with input from local gardeners, community groups, and City Councillors. A modified version of his draft was ultimately approved by City Council and posted to the City’s website. Michael practised as a permaculture gardener on the Haultain Common for almost two years, before co-founding the Fair Field, a boulevard garden near Fairfield and Cook. To different degrees, he helps maintain three boulevard gardens in town, the Fair Field, the Haultain Annex and the Haultain Common. He also created and administers “Street Greens”, a website dedicated to boulevard gardening in the City of Gardens.

Register for this workshop online through our Eventbrite page, phone 250-386-9676 or email office@compost.bc.ca.

Compost Education Centre memberships get you free workshops, discounts at garden centres around town and more great perks! Sign up or learn more on our website.
