DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
The rise and fall of coralline algae
=0D=0A=

Speaker: Patrick Martone
=0D=0A=

Seaweeds provide food and habitat for marine communities around the world. Their beauty, diversity, and complex evolutionary history are a constant source of inspiration. This presentation will start with an overview of seaweed biodiversity and evolution. Then, we will focus on a fascinating group of seaweeds that are ecologically important, globally abundant, and yet often overlooked: calcified “coralline” algae. Using fossil records and molecular data we will talk about their ancient history and modern diversity and discuss ongoing efforts to understand their ecological roles and sensitivity to future climate stress.
=0D=0A=
