Conductor Yariv Aloni opens the programme with the Candide Overture, Leonard Bernstein&rsquo;s brilliantly-scored homage to the naive and pure-hearted young man of Voltaire&rsquo;s novella.&nbsp; Johannes Brahms was a young lad of 15 when he first heard the cz&aacute;rd&aacute;s, or folk dances &ndash; played by refugees passing through Hamburg as they escaped the Hungarian revolution &ndash; that were later to form the backbone of his lively Hungarian Dances.&nbsp; Also on the programme - young musicians from the orchestra perform concertos both familiar and rare:<br /><br />Mozart&nbsp; Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola<br />Saint-Sa&euml;ns&nbsp; Violin Concerto No. 3<br />Arutiunian&nbsp; Trumpet Concerto<br />Franz and Karl Doppler&nbsp; Rigoletto Fantasy for two flutes and orchestra&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br /><br />For 29 years the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra &ndash; expressive, focused, and adventurous - has brought symphonic sounds to thousands of music lovers, young and old, in communities from Bamfield to Whitehorse and Haida Gwaii.&nbsp; In rehearsals, sectionals, and workshops, the orchestra&rsquo;s 60 players explore symphonic style, develop ensemble and performance skills, and build lasting friendships.&nbsp; In the rehearsal hall and on the concert stage, the GVYO brings music to life as only young people can, with verve, enthusiasm and inexhaustible energy, orchestrating joy for themselves and their audience alike.<br /><br />Yariv Aloni was appointed Music Director of GVYO in July 2010, having served as Associate Music Director since 2002.&nbsp; As violist he has performed and recorded worldwide.&nbsp; Along with performing and teaching and leading the GVYO, he holds the posts of Music Director of the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria and the Victoria Chamber Orchestra.</p>
