DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
We are doing a Mussel fundraiser for Baby Kaiya Westlind McEwen on June 10th at 6 pm. We have had a generous donation from Saltspring Mussels, so we are doing Mussels 8 different ways! As well as our regular menu! We will have live local musicians, great drink specials and door prices! Moby`s will be donating all net proceeds to Kaiya and her family! Moby’s will be dedicating Pint Club for the month of June to Baby Kaiya as well! Pint Club is a weekly event, and just one of the many ways we give back to our community! Feel free to bring your own mug and join our weekly draw to win a gift certificate to Moby’s. All the proceeds are donated to a non profit organization in our area, Moby’s also contributes all the money collected from returnable bottles and containers into the Pint Club fund! Kaiya has a genetic condition, called alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency A1AT deficiency (A1AD). This condition makes it so her body is deficient of anti-trypsin, a protein that protects her body from enzymes of inflammatory cells. In A1AD, the anti-trypsin that the liver makes doesn’t work the same as it does in other people. This can cause build up of the protein in the liver, and of scar tissue in the liver (cirrhosis). Anti-trypsin normally protects the lungs, so people with A1AD are also more susceptible to having lung issues. We learned that Kaiya had A1AD early on, because she had jaundice, a yellowing of the skin. While we have been followed by the Children’s Hospital throughout her life, Kaiya has developed into a delightful and active baby. She has a wonderful smile, is a joy to …play with, and loves her Mommy and Daddy, and brother Evan. We all love her very much.” ~ excerpt from www.caringbridge.org Kaiya has cirrhosis of the liver will soon need a liver transplant. The family hopes to come home for a rest in the next few days, before going to Edmonton in June to meet with the transplant team for an assessment. We don’t know a lot at this point, but it seems to me that Kaiya is doing very well under the circumstances. At 15 months old, Kaiya and her parents have spent the last month in Vancouver at the BC Women and Childrens Hospital. Kaiya has undergone a battery of tests, dealt with the norwalk virus, has been on a feeding tube for weeks, and is on antibiotics as doctors investigate the possibility of an infection. Despite all of this, Kaiya remains social and curious, active and playful, as you can see on her videos and pictures that family has posted. Terri Robertson
