=0D=0A=Directors Notes: Set in the early 1980s in a dingy church hall in North London, Stepping Out is a warm and funny play about the lives, laughs, and loves of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap dance class. Despite the students at first treating the classes as social occasions and showing little co-ordination, they later develop a level of skill and cohesiveness and by the play’s end they have transformed into triumphant tappers.
=0D=0A=Additional Notes: – British accents, appropriate to the character, are required for all roles. – After the show is cast, there will be a read through in early June, date TBA. – The casting is early so that the actors can brush up (or acquire) their tap dancing skills prior to the beginning of rehearsals, which will be in mid-October. – Please come having read the script but a prepared audition piece is not necessary. –
=0D=0A=Auditions will include both reading and dancing. – Please bring hard-soled shoes, or tap shoes if you have them.
=0D=0A=Characters – Looking for actors ages 20-75 years old to play: – Mavis: 30-40, the teacher and an ex-pro dancer, complex character. Will perform a solo dance. – Dorothy: 30-45, timid, well-meaning. – Lynne: 20 (the youngest ), eager to please. Has some dance training. – Mrs. Fraser: battle-axe, 50-75, pianist (must be able to play the piano). – Maxine: 40-something, shrewd, smart-aleck. – Andy: mid-30s painfully shy, insecure. – Geoffrey: mid-40s, quiet, self-effacing. – Vera: 35, snobby, posh accent, fastidious, well-meaning. – Sylvia: early 30s, bubbly, working class, over-ample curves. – Rose: 30-40, cheerful, uncoordinated, Trinidadian.
