Andrew Homzy’s N.O.L.A. NightHawks
=0D=0A=

Two Nights at Hermann's in Victoria 10 musicians playing a rich variety of New Orleans Music and Traditional Jazz Swing, Blues, Funk, Joy and Happiness Music for Dancing and Contemplation
=0D=0A=

Old songs made New. New songs made Newer -
=0D=0A=

Ranging from the traditional jazz repertoire to contemporary and popular New Orleans styles, Homzy’s NightHawks present familiar and new material in an exciting and fresh way through creative, interesting arrangements and a unique instrumentation of two trumpets, two trombones, clarinet, baritone sax and a four-piece rhythm section.
=0D=0A=

Popular and contemporary New Orleans pieces such as The Meters’ Cissy Strut and Randy Newman songs are yanked-in to the jazz world, while a piece by Lillian Hardin Armstrong - yes, Louis’ wife - is transformed into an engaging rhumba replete with collective improvisation.Classic jazz pieces associated with Bix Beiderbecke and Hoagy Carmichael sit alongside those of Wynton Marsalis and Thelonious Monk. Andrew Homzy and his NightHawks bring all the music associated with and inspired by New Orleans to one place - without the restriction of categories.
=0D=0A=

A Nanaimo citizen since 2009, Homzy was a moving force on the Montreal jazz scene for more than 40 years. The Andrew Homzy Jazz Orchestra was featured many times at the Montréal Jazz Festival and many of their concerts were broadcast over Radio-Canada.In 1999, Homzy was commissioned to direct a special concert/broadcast celebrating Duke Ellington’s 100th birthday. The orchestra assembled for that event comprised musicians from 15 countries. Andrew Homzy’s N.O.L.A. NightHawks have played a Jazz Vespers at the church in Mill Bay. where they interacted with the minister in exploring the spiritual and celebratory side of the music - my arrangement of St. James Infirmary with the Bach chorale as a prelude being an example. In Nanaimo, they played a totally-buzzed concert/dance at the historic and elegant Dorchester Hotel which attracted an over-capacity audience - incuding a parade complete with a 2nd line contingent carrying decorative umbrellas and our Grand Marshall throwing-out beads to the audience. While their mission is to focus on the Art of jazz, they do acknowledge the party-band aspect of The Big Easy as well as the the popular dance music - R’n’B and funk which had such a great influence on North American popular music. Buzz, indeed.
=0D=0A=

In Crofton they played to a record breaking audience in their Sunday afternoon jazz series. Twice, they played the Avalanche in Courtenay, to sold-out audiences On Friday and Saturday, April 17-18, Andrew Homzy’s N.O.L.A. NightHawks will do two nights at Hermann’s. They encourage movement, if not dancing, from the audience in the New Orleans tradition.
=0D=0A=
