DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:A calotype negative contact printed on salted paper was the first lens-based process to register a reproducible image. In the early 1840’s, William Henry Fox Talbot invented the method when he discovered that combining silver nitrate with salt on a sheet of paper resulted in a chemical reaction that was light sensitive. In the 1850’s Louis Desire Blanquart-Evrard developed the albumen paper printing technique, which soon became the dominant - and first commercially oriented method - of reproducing an image from a camera.=0D=0A=

In this two-day workshop, participants will learn the historical applications of each method, experiment with various coating techniques and discuss paper selection as well as how to produce the best negative for contact printing.  They will make contact prints from botanicals and negatives from their own archives.=0D=0A=

Participants will also build their own contact printing frames and prepare salted albumen for future use, enabling them to continue to develop their skills in these methods beyond the workshop.  =0D=0A=

WHAT TO BRING=0D=0A=

- Botanicals - fresh or dried.=0D=0A=
- Work clothes; that you don't mind getting dirty * Aprons, gloves & eye protection are available at the studio.=0D=0A=
- Negatives (film or paper) for printing. =0D=0A=
If students wish to enlarge negatives, this can be done at Luz prior to the workshop (a fee may be applicable)=0D=0A=
Notes: Please note that for both salted paper and albumen printing, relatively dense, high contrast negatives yield the best results.=0D=0A=

Materials to build your own 11x14 contact printing frame (yours to take home!), paper & transparencies for printing... We expect you will make between 5-7 salted prints and 4-6 albumen prints.
