Friday, February 2nd, 2018

The World Community Film Festival, in its 27th year, is the longest-running social justice film festival held in BC. Every year hundreds of people participate in the festival.

Over 30 of the most inspiring documentaries from Canada and abroad cover a myriad of social justice topics. Many of the uplifting and entertaining films have received rave reviews and awards at festivals such as Hot Docs, and Vancouver International Film Festival.

Opening night feature, Meet Beau Dick, Maker of Monsters, is a portrait of a Canadian art legend, an enigmatic carver from Alert Bay, BC. Beau Dick's remarkable masks have been celebrated across the global art scene as vibrant expressions of West Coast Indigenous culture and a sophisticated crossover into the contemporary art world. In his activism, Beau relied on his culture to inform him. Filmmakers will be in attendance for a Q&A session.

Four downtown Courtenay venues run simultaneously on Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm with films about Indigenous issues, food security, diversity and  human rights, and resilience in communities around the world. Saturday afternoon check out the Family Films from 1:15 pm to 2:45 pm at the Florence Filberg Centre.

Closing night film, Dolores, features Dolores Huerta, an equal partner in co-founding the first US farm workers' union with Cesar Chavez. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labour justice alongside Chavez, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century. “Exuberantly inspiring… makes you want to march and dance.” San Francisco Chronicle. This film won the Audience Award at the San Francisco Film Festival and Best Documentary at the Seattle International Film Festival.
